PROVIDENCE – MIY Story Studio, short for Make It Yours, opened Thursday on Westminster Street to encourage workers and residents to share their thoughts about Rhode Island as part of a new statewide tourism campaign.

The studio opened Thursday afternoon with a public reception; a series of more structured workshops will kick off on Friday. The first, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will focus on “Design and Storytelling,” featuring local designers talking about how to use graphic design in storytelling.
The free, walk-in space allows visitors to submit, on small cards, a 140-character story for the “story wall,” and place a pin and a card with a descriptive experience on an outsized map of Rhode Island.
Small viewfinder cards in the form of the state’s new logo, with a gap where the sail would be to frame digital photos, are available as well.
State tourism and marketing experts are trying to encourage Rhode Islanders to share their favorite experiences and destinations on social media, using the hashtag #MyRIStory. The campaign hopes to mine Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for the best images and experiences using the hashtag, and will ask people if they can share with state followers.
Seth Goldenberg, CEO and founder of Epic Decade, and chief creative officer for the state’s tourism campaign, said the effort in coming weeks will be to encourage Rhode Islanders to share their visions for what the state should promote.
“We’re inviting people to come, have some fun, celebrate Rhode Island, and tell us the stories of Rhode Island,” he said.
The MIY Story Studio is at 250 Westminster St., in downtown Providence, and will be open through Friday, May 6. It then will tour the state, stopping in each of the Rhode Island tourism districts. The hours in Providence are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
On Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m., the studio will host a workshop on Design as a Social Practice. On Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m., Big Nazo Lab will bring some of its creatures to the work space, allowing visitors to interact with characters.
