Make independent contractors easier to hire, not harder

To the Editor:
As the unemployment picture gets worse in Rhode Island, some in government are actually making it harder to find work. At the urging of labor unions, some state and federal officials are trying to make it more difficult to hire independent contractors.
Many Rhode Islanders work as independent contractors – hair stylists, writers, real estate agents, truck drivers, graphic designers and more. They enjoy flexible hours, make their own schedules and are responsible for their own health insurance and taxes.
As companies are getting back on their feet – and other brave souls are launching new businesses here – many rely on the ability to work with independent contractors to build their businesses and attract customers.
I hope that other small-business owners will join me in asking our elected officials not to change the rules on independent contractors. Rhode Island’s economic climate already makes it difficult for small businesses to succeed. They certainly don’t need more government red tape.
