WESTERLY – Malcolm A. Makin, of Raymond James in Westerly, again has been named the state’s top financial adviser, as six Rhode Islanders made Barron’s 2016 Top 1,200 Financial Advisors list.
Makin, with assets under management totaling $1 billion, works with all types of clients, including high-net worth and ultra-high-net worth. He started his career as a youth director at the Y.M.C.A, but after having a gun pointed at him he decided he needed to find a new job, according to Barron’s.
After a stint in the insurance industry, Makin turned to financial planning, “where he prides himself on educating clients on how to ride out of the market’s ups and downs,” according to the article.
Makin, 71, tops the list at No. 1, followed by Edythe De Marco, of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Providence at No. 2, David Reiser, of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in Newport at No. 3, Robert DiColo, of UBS Financial Services in Providence at No. 4, Carolann Doherty Brown, of UBS Financial Services in Newport at No. 5 and James Hilton, of UBS Financial Services of Newport at No. 6. More information can be found at www.barrons.com/report/top-financial-advisors/1000/rhodeisland/2016.
Rhode Island’s topped-ranked financial advisers are all repeats from last year’s list, ranking in the same positions, with the exception of Hilton, who is new this year to the list. The rankings are done by state.
“Given the twists and turns of the past few years, this year’s Top 1,200 Advisors might be the best equipped ever to figure out how to ride this buffalo,” according to the article.
