PROVIDENCE – Former Senate Fiscal Advisor, Peter M. Marino, will be the first director of the new Office of Management and Budget, Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced Wednesday morning at the Statehouse.
“The OMB is principally designed so we can have effective government that the taxpayer can afford,” Marino told Providence Business News. “We’ll be looking across state agencies to improve efficiency, and we’ll be integrating the budget.”
“Peter Marino has worked on public finance issues in Rhode Island for decades, and he has a thorough understanding of how our state government functions,” Chafee, who called for the creation of the OMB in his fiscal 2013 budget proposal, said in a statement.
“He will bring a broad range of knowledge and expertise to this position, and he shares my commitment to providing the best possible services to Rhode Islanders in the most cost-effective manner,” added Chafee.
Before joining the State Fiscal Office in 2008, Marino was director of research and policy at RDW Group - a Providence-based communications and advertising firm, - director of policy for the R.I. Public Expenditure Council and senior budget analyst in the State Budget Office.
The governor has tapped the OMB to help the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority get back on its feet, involving a review of its budget deficit to determine whether the transit agency can be run more efficiently.
