Mass. GOP legislators look to repeal computer services tax

Posted 9/4/13

MIDDLEBORO, Mass. – Republican state legislators in Massachusetts plan to introduce legislation to repeal a new regulation that subjects certain computer and software services to the state sales tax, according to the Taunton Daily Gazette.

Legislators speaking out against the tax include Mass. Rep. Keiko Orrall, R-Lakeville, and Rep. Shaunna O’Connell, R-Taunton.

Last week, Orrall and O’Connell participated in a Middleboro forum with the Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Cranberry Country Chamber of Commerce and small business owners, some of whom believe the regulation unfairly targets small businesses, according to the Daily Gazette.

House and Senate Republicans soon plan to introduce legislation to repeal the tax, said Orrall.

Gov. Deval L. Patrick agreed to meet with lawmakers and business leaders this week to discuss concerns about the tax but indicated that the tax would have to be replaced with other new revenue if repealed.
