Mass. group looks to boost women in trades

NEW BEDFORD – Women make up just a handful of union members in trades organizations – something the Southeastern Massachusetts Building Trades Group wants to change.

The trades group, an organization of about 14 southeastern Massachusetts trade unions, is considering creating a pre-apprenticeship program for women and minorities in the region, according to a report by SouthCoast Today.

“A lot of women don’t even think to go into the building trades with stereotypes being what they are,” said Jim Pimental, vice president of Bricklayers Local 3.

Union women’s median weekly earnings are on average $904, compared to $687 for nonunion women’s weekly earnings, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. •
