Mass. unemployment remains at 4.7 percent

BOSTON – The Massachusetts unemployment rate remained at 4.7 percent in July following a revision to the June unemployment rate, the Mass. Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced.

The new job estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate Massachusetts gained 7,200 jobs in July, marking the 10th consecutive month of jobs gains. Year to date, Massachusetts has added 46,200 jobs.

Over the year, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell 1 percentage point from 5.7 percent in July 2014.

The July state unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 5.3 percent reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

July 2015 estimates show that 3,444,400 residents were employed and 170,000 were unemployed. There were 32,400 fewer unemployed persons over the year compared to July 2014.

According to the executive office, the largest private-sector percentage job gains over the year were in professional, scientific and business services; education and health services. •
