MassChallenge names 3 R.I. finalists

BOSTON – Three Rhode Island companies – Nordic Technology Group, NBA Math Hoops and Prepmatic – were named as finalists in the 2012 MassChallenge.

For its 125 2012 finalists, the South Boston accelerator program chose 46 technology startups, 25 social impact startups, 21 startups in life sciences and health care, 11 in energy and clean technology and 22 in other categories.

Nordic Technology Group is the developer of an indoor positioning system, which allows older people to maintain independent active lives.

NTG’s technology “provides families and home health care services with the exact location of their loved one inside their home, allowing them to pro-actively monitor their movements, behavior and health,” according to the company’s page on the MassChallenge website. “NTG gives older people freedom – and their loved ones peace of mind.”

Providence-based NBA Math Hoops is one of 25 social impact startup finalists in the competition. The company, which is partnered with the National Basketball Association, aims to improve math literacy among urban youth by making fun educational tools that harness the power of the NBA.

Prepmatic, also a social impact finalist, is an alumnus of Providence startup accelerator Betaspring and the creator of standardized test preparation tools.

According to the company’s page on the MassChallenge website, Prepmatic makes memorizing information easier. The products “combine traditional study methods with the latest research in memory retention to allow our users to study effectively.”

The three Rhode Island startups were chosen as MassChallenge finalists from 1,237 applications.

Startup teams also take part in a business competition and the winners will share $1.1 million in prize money and $4 million in in-kind prizes.

The final judging will take place between October 1 and 11, with an awards ceremony naming the winners on October 22.
