Matching people with positions, done right

The staff-recruitment agency – based in Providence but serving all of southern New England – is one of the fastest-growing companies in Rhode Island. In 2009, the company’s sales totaled $238,000; by 2011 that figure had soared to $758,000.
“Since this time last year, we’ve experienced a 44 percent growth,” says President and Founder Dawn Apajee. “We expect that to continue.”
City Personnel, which has a full-time staff of three, helps businesses, hospitals and law firms find the right person for both permanent and temporary positions. The company is known for its thorough review of candidates, which typically involves phone interviews, lengthy office interviews, professional reference checks and qualification verification.
Though many still grumble about the slow growth of the state’s economy, Apajee attributes her success in part to steady improvement. “There are jobs out there,” she said. “One thing that’s set us apart is that we’re a small company, so we can be flexible. When times are tough, we can tailor our services to suit the situation.”
Apajee’s professional experience plays a role in the company’s performance as well. She began her career in London in the ’90s, and worked in Chicago for several years before settling in Providence a decade ago. She worked for a small agency before launching her own business.
