Mayor Doyle, credited with city revival, dead at 78

PAWTUCKET – James E. Doyle, a former mayor and fixture in city government for 40 years, died on Aug. 26. News of his death came during opening events of the Pawtucket Arts Festival, a signature event he started nearly two decades ago.

Doyle, 78, is credited in many ways with Pawtucket’s renaissance, the remaking of the city into a community for the arts and infusing new life into the city’s many dormant mills, The Valley Breeze reported.

In 1972, Doyle was elected to and served on the City Council for more than 27 years. He spent time as both president and chairman of the council’s Finance Committee.

Doyle was elected mayor in 1997. He set a political record for serving the most consecutive years, 13, since the city was incorporated in 1885. •
