PROVIDENCE – Mayor Angel Taveras said that the city will begin free curbside pickup of Christmas trees starting Jan. 12.

The service will run through Jan. 24.

Trees will be collected by the city and delivered to the R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation in Johnston to be turned into compost. Residents are asked to take the following steps to ensure that their tree will be picked up:

  • Place trees at the curb on regular trash collection days.
  • All ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stands must be removed from trees.
  • Do not place trees in any type of bag.

The city’s free yard debris pickup program that began in the spring will end for the season on Dec. 12. Yard debris must be disposed of in paper yard-waste bags or in an open, waterproof container clearly marked “yard debris.” Free “yard debris” stickers are available in the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.

After the Dec. 12 deadline, residents may want to consider composting yard waste at home. They also can check with a local community garden. Visit http://www.providenceri.com/provconnex/community-gardens. Rhode Island Resource Recovery also accepts yard waste year-round for a minimum of $30 per ton. For information, contact 942-1430.

Waste Management will resume pickup of yard debris in April. For information, contact the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services at 421-2489.
