PROVIDENCE – Michael E. McKelvy will become CEO of Gilbane Building Co. in January, the company announced on Wednesday.

The company last year appointed McKelvy president and chief operating officer, marking the first-ever nonfamily member to hold that position.

He’s the first nonfamily CEO in the history of the business.

McKelvy, who is succeeding chairman and CEO Thomas F. Gilbane Jr., also will retain the president title.
Gilbane will remain as chairman of Gilbane Building Co. and as chairman and CEO of Gilbane Inc., a holding company with two principal subsidiaries, Gilbane Building Co. and Gilbane Development Co.
McKelvy joined the company last year, following a 26-year career with CH2M Hill. As president and CEO, McKelvy will direct the company’s growth.
“I am honored and excited to lead the Gilbane team. The commitment of everyone in this company to integrity, client service and above all safety is what makes our organization special. Our 2,600 employees are the foundation of our success. I look forward to continuing to work with Tom, the board and the management team to achieve future goals and write the next chapter in our 142-year history,” McKelvy, a registered architect in 16 states, said in a statement.

Gilbane joined the company full time in 1970. In 2008, Gilbane became president and CEO of Gilbane Inc. and chairman and CEO in 2010.
The company has more than 50 U.S. and international offices and an operating volume of approximately $4 billion. Under Gilbane’s leadership, the company implemented a “one company” operating philosophy that maximizes the organization’s resources and expertise on projects and business pursuits, according to a news release.

Gilbane will continue to set strategy and goals for the parent entity, working in collaboration with the board of directors and the executive leadership teams of both organizations – Gilbane Building Co. and Gilbane Development Co. He described McKelvy as the “perfect fit” to lead the company going forward.
“I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead for our company and its people, and look forward to working with Mike and the leadership team as we stay committed to delivering outstanding service to our clients and continually growing as a private, family-owned business,” Gilbane said.
