MANSFIELD – Medtronic PLC plans to consolidate its operations here.

Company spokesman Fernando Vivanco said Medtronic will consolidate its buildings from four to three.

The buildings are leased, and one lease will not be renewed. He said the change is not being driven by any reductions in employees, but rather a company shift to a “flexible working environment” that it started implementing several years ago. Some employees travel frequently, while others may work remotely, lessening the need for dedicated office space, Vivanco said.
Moving to a flexible workplace will enable Medtronic to use space more efficiently while addressing different work styles and needs of employees, he said.
“We don’t need as much space. It’s a cost-savings measure,” Vivanco said Friday.
He also said that a flexible workspace environment is not a new concept, as many other leading global companies, including AT&T, Fidelity Investments and Microsoft have adopted flexible work environments.
He said Medtronic, which is the world’s biggest maker of heart-rhythm devices, is not disclosing the amount being saved, or the number of employees it has in Mansfield, except to say “we have a sizable presence there.”
According to Providence Business News’ 2016 Book of Lists, Medtronic employed 1,400 in Mansfield, and is the largest biotechnology employer in the region.

He said there have been some reductions in the workforce in Mansfield over the past year, but declined to provide the number. No additional layoffs are planned, he said.
Companywide, Medtronic employs more than 85,000.

Minneapolis-based Medtronic Inc. said in June 2014 that it would buy Dublin-based Covidien PLC, which ran its U.S. headquarters and corporate offices out of Mansfield, for $42.9 billion in cash and stock.
The deal, which closed in January 2015, resulted in a combined company called Medtronic. It is based in Ireland for tax purposes.
