Memorial institutes hospitalwide lullaby program

PAWTUCKET – A donation from a Pawtucket family has enabled Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island to institute a program through which a lullaby will play every time a baby is born in the hospital.

John McConaghy III and his family made a donation several months ago for purposes to be identified by hospital leadership. Acting President Edward Schottland approved using a portion of the funds to install software to play the lullabies and the system was made live in the last few weeks.

“As a community hospital, we see a wide variety of patients at different phases of their lives. By playing a simple lullaby on the broadcast system throughout the hospital, we are all reminded of the miracle and joy of life,” Schottland said.

When a baby is born in one of the hospital’s newly updated labor-delivery-recovery rooms in The Birthing Center, the father or another designated support person can go into the hallway and push the designated button. Within seconds, strains of a lullaby - the hospital has chosen the Brahms music box – will start to play across the complex for 10 seconds.

“When you hear the lullaby overhead somewhere in the hospital, you can actually see people pause and smile. It’s a beautiful reminder of what we do here and how we impact people’s lives every day with the work we do,” said Dr. Michael A. Pepi, obstetrician- and gynecologist-in-chief at Memorial.
