DARTMOUTH – Jeff and Jeanne Mendes, parents of the late Jason P. Mendes, along with Jason’s widow, Kristen Mendes, this week presented a $6,045 check to the Schwartz Center for Children, received by center CEO Mary Hodgson.
The check is from the Jason P. Mendes Fund, established in his memory after he passed away in March of 2011 from brain cancer. Also present was Karen Mitchell, the chairwoman of the fund committee. The money was raised through an annual bowl-a-thon in June.
The center is a nonprofit organization with offices at 1 Posa Place serving children with a variety of special medical and developmental needs from birth to age 21 since 1947.
“Earlier this year, when I came for a tour of the center and saw how much care these children need and get here…I wanted to do something to help out,” said Kristen Mendes. “Jason would have wanted this.”
Jason’s mother, Jeanne, added, “As I walk through these halls here today, I can feel Jason’s presence. Jason was always one to stick up for the underdog. He would help anyone in need, especially those that couldn’t help themselves. Yes, he is here with us today and I’m sure he is very pleased.”
The Jason P. Mendes bowl-a-thon is held annually in June at Wonder Bowl in New Bedford. Half of the proceeds are allocated to a trust fund for Jason’s daughters.
