PROVIDENCE – The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals, along with Southcoast Health, are among the nation’s top hospitals for clinical excellence, according to Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about the nation’s physicians and hospitals.

Southcoast Health, based in New Bedford, announced Jan. 17 that it received the 2017 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades.

This recognition puts Southcoast Health – as well as The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals, both Lifespan entities that were duly recognized – in the top 5 percent for clinical excellence among more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

Patients treated in hospitals receiving the Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence Award have, on average, a lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the designation, according to Healthgrades.

This is the second consecutive year that Southcoast Health has received the award, the hospital system reported.

“When you spend time in a Southcoast Health facility, whether as a patient or a visitor, it is clear that the mission of our employees is to deliver both clinical excellence and personalized care that is unmatched,” Southcoast Health President & CEO Keith A. Hovan said in the statement. “Southcoast Health physicians, nurses and staff work tirelessly to achieve the very best results for patients, and I am pleased that this award from Healthgrades has further highlighted their tremendous efforts.”

During the 2017 study period (inpatient stays from 2013-2015), the 258 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence recipients demonstrated superior performance in clinical outcomes for Medicare patients on at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures, Healthgrades’ website reported.

According to Healthgrades, the Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence Award recipients demonstrate comprehensive, consistent quality across a range of conditions and procedures, while other hospitals may possess specific areas of expertise and high-quality outcomes for some conditions and procedures.

“Today more than 30 percent of people who choose a physician consult Healthgrades to better understand their options for care and place a high value on the outcomes and complications at the hospitals where the provider practices or treats patients. Therefore, high marks in clinical quality are a major differentiator for hospitals, and have a profound effect on consumers when they make decisions about where to receive care,” Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer, Healthgrades, said in a statement. “The hospitals that have achieved this distinction stand out from their peers because of their commitment to high quality clinical outcomes for their patients.”
