PROVIDENCE – A new surgical treatment for men with enlarged prostates is being offered at The Miriam Hospital.

Known as UroLift, the procedure is performed under the auspices of the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute, and is intended for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition that is extremely common among men 50 and older.

When a man has BPH, the prostate squeezes the urethra, and urine flow, urinary urgency, and the ability to empty the bladder completely can all be affected. Dr. Gyan Pareek, co-director of the institute and director of the Kidney Stone Center at The Miriam, said in a recent statement that the procedure can bring relief to a large swathe of sufferers.

“Fifty percent of men who are age 50 and 80 percent of men who are age 80 and above are adversely affected by BPH – unable to enjoy their normal, daily activities – and this can cause discomfort, anxiety, and other urologic complications,” said Pareek. “By offering our patients this new treatment option through the institute, we strengthen our goal to provide patients with the most innovative and technologically advanced surgical care.”

Unlike some other treatments, including transurethral resection of the prostate, UroLift does not involve cutting, heating, or removal of prostate tissue and does not cause sexual dysfunction. It is an outpatient procedure, so men are able to return home the same day.
