PROVIDENCE – Monday is the deadline for filing personal income tax returns in Rhode Island. All resident and nonresident returns must be electronically filed or postmarked on or before 11:59 p.m. tonight.

In a release on Friday reminding Rhode Island taxpayers of the deadline, Tax Administrator David M. Sullivan urged taxpayers to complete their returns as soon as possible, and to file them electronically to ensure prompt processing.

Of the 414,770 returns filed so far this year, 87.4 percent (352,551) of them were electronically filed. Only 37,815 taxpayers filed paper returns so far this year.

Taxpayers who can’t file a personal income tax return by the deadline can file for an automatic six-month extension that will push their filing deadline to Oct. 15. The extension is for both resident and nonresident returns.

The average refund this year is $530, according to the Tax Division, an increase of 3 percent from 2012. So far, the R.I. Division of Taxation has issued roughly $166 million in personal income tax refunds this year.

In addition to personal income tax returns, April 15 also marks the final deadline for property tax relief claims on Form RI-1040H and for the residential lead abatement credit on Form RI-6238.

“Even if you plan to file your regular return on extension, you still must file your claims for property-tax relief and for the residential lead abatement credit by April 15,” said the Tax Division release.

April 15 is also the filing deadline for calendar-year limited liability companies that are taxed as pass-through entities, calendar-year limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships, general partnerships and single-member LLCs that file their annual returns on Form RI-1065.
