More than $12K given to five organizations by RIC’s Sherlock Center

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College’s Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities announced that $12,081 in 2016 Access for All Abilities mini grants will be awarded to five organizations across Rhode Island.

With the goal of increasing long-term accessibility and inclusion of people with all abilities, the Sherlock Center’s mini grant initiative funds projects which increase access for people with disabilities connecting them with social, leisure, recreational and cultural activities in the community.

The 2016 selected proposals are:

  • 2nd Story Theatre’s handicap-friendly renovations to its Warren facility ($2,500,
  • Exeter Public Library’s purchase of a two-bay Americans with Disabilities Act combination swing set for Chelsea Park ($2,500),
  • Jamestown Arts Center will use the funding to train its staff to better support individuals with disabilities using their programs($2,081.61),
  • A hearing loop will be installed by the North Kingstown Free Library’s meeting room ($2,500) and,
  • Westerly’s Ocean Community YMCA will use the funding to train one of its employees to become a certified Adaptive Sailing Instructor and purchase equipment that will allow campers of all abilities to safely participate in sailing.

More than $78,000 has been granted to 35 businesses and organizations through Access for All Abilities mini grants awarded by the Sherlock Center since the initiative’s 2009 inception. The grant program is funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Developmental Disabilities.
