Layoffs fall 1% in April

WASHINGTON – In April, 2,081 Rhode Island workers were laid off, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Year-over-year, the number of layoffs dropped 1.1 percent from 2,105 in April 2011. Rhode Island’s April layoff data is not seasonally adjusted.

Throughout April, Rhode Island saw nine mass layoff events, which affected at least 50 workers at a time. This figure is unchanged from 2011 data.

Across the U.S., employers took 1,388 mass layoff actions in April, involving 135,600 workers, seasonally adjusted.

Mass layoff events in April increased by 115 from March, and the number of associated initial unemployment claims increased by 14,290.

Year-over-year, the average number of weekly mass layoff events increased by five to 355, while weekly initial claims decreased by 1,394 to 36,590.

Nationally, the school and employee bus transportation industry saw the largest number of initial claims, with 20,482 jobless, not seasonally adjusted.

Among the census regions, the Northeast registered the largest number of initial jobless claims in April, with 48,882 initial claimants.

The Northeast region includes Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
