More than skin deep

Stephanie Additon, CEO and founder of Java Skincare, is celebrating the recent success of the company’s all-natural Double Shot Body Serum, which won the Spa Heroes’ expert selection this June. A panel of 30 spa directors from across the globe chose the caffeine-infused serum, but that isn’t Java Skincare’s only product that is getting attention. The company was one of the vendors to provide products in the gift bags for the nominees and presenters at the 57th annual Grammy Awards. Additon and her husband are also partners of Updike’s Newtowne Coffee Roasting Co. Prior to her entrepreneurial career with coffee, Additon served in a number of nonprofit roles and she was the co-founder of the Family & Community Engagement Program in Rhode Island.

How do you keep your products eco-friendly?

Owning our coffee shop gave me years of experience with sourcing organic, fair trade, shade grown and Smithsonian Certified green coffee. When we started sourcing ingredients for skin care, I naturally wanted everything to be held to the same standards that we hold our coffee to. All our ingredients are plant based and we source as many organic ingredients as we can.

How long did it take to get the initial prototype out?

We were in research and development for our current line for about two years before we actually launched a product. There is so much information out there about antioxidant levels and what caffeine can do for your skin and we wanted to know as much as we possibly could before finalizing the products.

Do you have any plans to launch any new products or lines?

We have an eye serum and a face serum that we have been testing for a couple months, now I cannot wait to have it in full production. We hope to launch a couple products every few months so people can continue to grow their JAVA collection. But our main reason for creating new products is that we want to use them. •
