JAMESTOWN – Starting Monday, the R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority raised toll prices for E-ZPass customers who fail to mount their transponders correctly.

Improperly and unmounted E-ZPass transponders issued by RITBA not only require Newport Pell Bridge employees to raise the toll gate manually, but they are causing public safety and traffic issues, says the agency.

For those who do not affix the E-ZPass to an automobile’s windshield correct, RITBA has raised the toll to $2 per axle – $4 for a passenger vehicle – in an attempt to eliminate these issues. If a vehicle has more than two axles, it will pay higher fees.

In addition to the toll, repeat offenders will be charged a $25 administration fee. Serious repeat offenders may have to forfeit the transponder.

On June 20 RITBA launched a public information campaign to raise awareness of the necessity to properly mount transponders. The campaign was launched in response to the safety concerns and traffic delays caused by more than 1,000 motorists per month who required assistance.

Revenue generated from tolls on the Newport Pell Bridge are used to maintain it as well as the Jamestown Bridge, the Mt. Hope Bridge and the Sakonnet Bridge.
