Two Bristol County cities made a list of the 10 most boring communities in Massachusetts.
Attleboro ranked as the second-most boring community in Massachusetts, behind only Leominster, according to the Movoto real estate website. Taunton ranked ninth.
Movoto wrote that the most exciting thing about Attleboro is that it was once known as the “jewelry capital of the world.” It also said that it doesn’t have many restaurants, and has a lack of active life options.
“This, plus a very spread out population (just 1,626 people per square mile) means that Attleboro residents are probably driving. A lot. So if that’s your idea of fun, maybe this place is a real diamond in the rough,” Movoto said.
Taunton, Movoto said, is only exciting around Christmastime, when it hosts one of the largest light displays in the Northeast.
“But then there’s the rest of the year. Granted, Taunton isn’t too terribly boring for families, but if you happen to be between the ages of 18 and 34, single, looking for any kind of nightlife, interesting food options, or walkability (with a more dense population), you might do better going to any one of the larger cities nearby. Even New Bedford is more exciting than this,” Movoto said.
Entertainment options may soon improve in Taunton, as part of the First Light Resort & Casino should be open by summer 2017.
The facility, to be built on Mashpee Wampanoag tribal lands in Taunton, will include 3,000 slot machines, 150 table games, 40 poker tables as well as a food court, fine dining, a lounge and performance stage, and indoor swimming pool.
To come up with its list, Movoto said it used U.S. Census data to find the 50 most populous places in the state, then studied such things as nightlife options per capita (bars, comedy clubs), live music venues per capita, active life options per capita (parks), fast food restaurants per capita, percentage of restaurants that are not fast food, percentage of young residents ages 18 to 34 (the lower the more boring) and population density (the lower the better).
