Mural Project is subject of Kickstarter Campaign

THE SOUTH WALL of the Gilbert S. Kahn Building, which houses the Newport Art Museum’s art school, is where a community mural would be completed this fall if Kickstarter funding goals are reached.

NEWPORT – The Newport Art Museum has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a $48,000 community mural project this fall.

The mural is to be located on the south wall of the Minnie and Jimmy Coleman Center for Creative Studies, the museum’s art school, in the Gilbert S. Kahn Building, near a small public park, said Kristan McClintock, museum marketing director.

If the funding goal is met, the mural would be professionally installed by artist Joseph Norman and his team from Color the World Bright, based on artwork created by seventh grade students in Newport, community residents, residents of the nearby Donovan Manor, and students participating in the museum studies program, McClintock said.

Funding to be raised will cover the cost of supplies to paint the mural itself and to facilitate the creation of drawings that Norman will fashion into a composite mural. Fully accessible when completed, the mural would be the first large-scale public mural in Newport.

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. The art museum qualified as a Kickstarter project because of its focus on the community effort of making the mural, McClintock said. Pledges can only be collected if the total funding amount is reached.

The art school wall faces two properties owned by the Newport Housing Authority, as well as an office building and the park. Nearly $20,000 in grant money from The Champlin Foundations, money that is not part of the project total, was used to repair the wall and prepare it for painting.

Once the funding goal is reached, Kickstarter is expected to contribute about $6,000, McClintock said.

Ocean State Charities Trust has committed $4,000 to the project.
