NORTH DARTMOUTH – A sustainable groundwater cleanup system was implemented and solar panels installed at the ReSolve Superfund site here on Monday.
The improvements were celebrated by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and local officials.
According to an EPA press release, the groundwater cleanup is happening through an “innovative biological treatment process” powered fully by solar panels at the site.
Between 1956 and 1980, the site operated as a chemical reclamation facility. It included a distillation tower, unlined lagoons and oil land farming. The nearby community relies on private wells for drinking water and since 1985, the EPA has overseen three cleanup actions at the site.
The EPA said that two “anaerobic bio-reactor” systems have been developed at the site. They are underground, contained, biological treatment beds where native microbes consume chlorinated volatile organic compounds. The agency described it as a “natural treatment process that minimizes the use of process chemicals and waste disposal.”
In addition, 644 solar panels provide 100 percent of the power needed to run the groundwater treatment system, the EPA said.
“EPA is very proud of the track record our Superfund program has with working to clean up sites with complex contamination issues all across New England,” Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England office, said in a statement.
Spalding said the “innovative” groundwater treatment system will provide a “sustainable and environmentally-preferable approach to the ongoing cleanup at the Resolve Superfund site.”
