NAMI support groups help families living with mental illness

PROVIDENCE – With one in five Americans living with a mental illness, many families facing these complicated diagnoses may feel isolated and unable to share their day-to-day concerns. There is help, however, through the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Rhode Island, which provides free support groups that offer safe and supportive spaces for people to share, learn and seek paths to recovery, according to a press statement from NAMI of Rhode Island.

NAMI Rhode Island offers two types of support groups; family support groups provide venues for family members, loved ones and caregivers of individuals with a mental illness to connect with other people facing similar situations, and connection recovery support groups are for individuals, 18 and older, who live with a mental illness and seek a hope and recovery-focused environment. The family support groups meet once a month for 90 minutes, while connection support groups meet each week for 90 minutes.

All NAMI of Rhode Island support groups are free and no registration is required. All groups are completely confidential and facilitated by a trained volunteer with lived experience.
