WJAR-TV NBC 10 and WPRI-TV CBS 12 had the highest news ratings in the area, according to Nielsen Media's May ratings data.

PROVIDENCE – Statistics on local television stations’ news show ratings and demographics in the May sweeps have been announced, based on data from the Nielsen Co. WJAR-TV NBC 10 led the way with eight of the top 10 news shows in the region, but Eyewitness News on WPRI-TV CBS 12 and Fox Providence also showed impressive gains in several time slots.
NBC 10’s 6 p.m. newscast was the region’s most-watched news program, with 53,000 viewers, a 10 percent year-over-year increase. The network also topped WPRI at every 15-minute interval between 4:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. Its overall morning news programming block grew 2 percent from the previous year, including a 24 percent increase at 5:30 a.m., when viewership grew from roughly 23,900 to 29,636, twice the number of WPRI viewers. NBC 10’s 5:30 a.m. broadcast grew 79 percent year-to-year in the 25-54 demographic.
NBC 10 also had the top ratings for its 5, 5:30, 6 and 11 p.m. time slots. Though both WJAR and WPRI posted large year-to-year increases for their morning shows, WPRI ratings were down at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m., while NBC 10 posted flat ratings or slight increases in the same time slots.
ABC 6 told PBN that its nighttime “News at 11” show posted a 30 percent increase in total households, growing from 8,060 to 11,160 viewers year-to-year. The network’s “This Morning” and “News at 5” saw growth in key women and adult demos: “This Morning” grew from 620 to 4,340 viewers year-to-year among women for its 6 a.m. time slot, and “News at 5” increased from 1,240 to 3,100 viewers among target women, a 250 percent rise.
Eyewitness News claimed the No. 1 spot for its noon news broadcast, a ranking that has been variable across different quarters recently. Its 6 a.m. broadcast was the market’s fastest-growing based on ratings, increasing 83 percent over last May in the key demographic of viewers between 25 and 54, from roughly 11,160 to 20,460 viewers.
And WPRI’s “The Rhode Show,” an entertainment and lifestyle morning news show, increased 250 percent year-to-year among viewers age 18 to 49. The show airs at 9 a.m. and competes with NBC’s “The Today Show.”
Online, WPRI.com led the region with 55 percent more unique visitors, 55 percent more page views and 36 percent more overall visits than its nearest competitor. NBC 10’s Facebook and Twitter pages — with 64,000 fans and 18,000 followers, respectively — earned it the region’s largest social media following.
