NHS to receive $1M grant, largest single gift in organization’s history

NEWPORT – The Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust gifted a $1 million grant to the Newport Historical Society, the largest donation in the nonprofit’s history, according to an NHS announcement on Tuesday.

The grant will support essential staffing, including educational and curatorial positions, at the nonprofit and, once matched through fundraising on behalf on the NHS, increase the organization’s endowment to $5 million and complete its Challenging the Future campaign.

To date, the Challenging the Future campaign helped fund the rehabilitation of the NHS Touro Street headquarters to house the Newport history collections and facilitate research and exhibition of the organization’s holdings for the estimated 160,000 people who visit the organization annually.

Reaching out to the community, the NHS recently revitalized a high school essay contest in which successful applicants will travel to New York City to see “Hamilton: An American Musical” and built a new initiative called Newport Eats which includes an annual fundraiser for the Community Garden partnership at Great Friends Meeting House.
