NHS scholarship transforms to cover new emphasis

NEWPORT – Hosted by the Newport Historical Society, the Buchanan-Burnham Summer Internship, now known as the Buchanan Burnham Endowment for Visiting Scholars, is entering its 15th year and is accepting applicants for its summer 2017 expanded focus.

New this year, thanks to funding from the Buchanan Burnham coffer, the full-time curator of the NHS will be replaced by a revolving position in which visiting curators will lend their expertise to the NHS collection.

“NHS’ collections are too comprehensive, and our programming arena too large for one person to be an expert in everything we do,” said Ruth Taylor, NHS executive director.

Those who take up the position will be mature scholars researching Newport-relevant subjects, and appointments will be made on a long-term, temporary, full- and part-time rate. There are three visiting curators lined up for 2017: Taylor Stoermer, former chief historian at Colonial Williamsburg; John Tschirch, formerly of the Preservation Society of Newport County; and Michael Simpson, a Native American history specialist and former Buchanan Burnham Fellow.

Buchanan Burnham Fellowships, three to five competitive summer placements focused on public history and research, will remain. Applications for these placements can be found on the NHS website.
