PROVIDENCE – Elmhurst Extended Care has been acquired by Brick, N.J.-based Tryko Partners LLC, and will be renamed Elmhurst Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center as part of a more than $5 million renovation of the property.

Tryko, which acquired the facility this month for an undisclosed price from CharterCARE Health Partners, said the renovations will be handled by its affiliate, Marquis Health Services, a third-generation nursing home operator.

Elmhurst, billed as the largest skilled nursing facility in Rhode Island, employs more than 200 health care professionals.

The 206-bed property at 50 Maude St. shares a campus with Roger Williams Medical Center and is next to the Providence VA Medical Center.

“Elmhurst has a long-standing reputation for providing quality rehabilitation and long-term care services for Rhode Island-area residents,” Tryko Partners’ Uri Kahanow, director of acquisitions, said in a statement. “The professional community and staff have been enthusiastic and supportive of our involvement and plans for the facility. We will be working closely with CharterCARE as we enhance Elmhurst’s role as the go-to skilled nursing provider within a renowned medical campus environment.”

Elmhurst features patient care on three floors, with 30 short-term care beds as well as a separate, 12-bed transitional care unit. It also features long-term care, including an Alzheimer’s special care unit.
According to Tryko, renovations will modernize the building and accommodate more programming. Rooms and common areas will be updated, and there will be day rooms for families and a multimedia room for short-term care patients. The therapy gym will be relocated within the building and expanded.

The resulting, 3,000-square-foot facility will offer rehabilitation therapy seven days per week.

Marquis will maintain relationships with the managed care organizations and insurance companies already affiliated with Elmhurst, Norman Rokeach, CEO of Marquis Health Services, said.

“We are developing new pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation programs, and we are working with Roger Williams Medical Center and other health care specialists to identify additional needs in the greater Providence community,” Rokeach said.

Chicago-based MB Financial provided financing for the acquisition.

Elmhurst is an “Eden Alternative” property. Eden Alternative is a nonprofit international organization dedicated to improving quality of life for elders and their care partners.
