BOSTON – The Region 1 director of the National Labor Relations Board has approved a settlement regarding workers’ complaints involving the Renaissance Providence Hotel.
On March 27, Regional Director Jonathan Kreisberg authorized the settlement, which Unite Here! Local Union 217 chose not to participate in, said NLRB Supervising Attorney Laura Sacks. The union, which had been working with about 60 hotel employees it hoped to represent, could not be immediately reached for comment.
The workers had alleged a variety of unfair labor practices, including giving the workers benefits for refusing to support the union. According to the settlement and Sacks, “every paragraph of the complaint that alleges something unlawful has been addressed.”
A special remedy that is included requires the hotel to post a notice regarding the main points of the settlement in English and Spanish and read them aloud in the presence of hotel management, Sacks added.
In an emailed statement, Richard MacAdams, chief legal counsel for the owners, the Procaccianti Group, said the hotel is “pleased” to resolve the matter with the NLRB despite the union’s “unwillingness” to participate in the settlement. •
