NEWPORT – Sanjay Mehta, an electrical engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, has been named an Asian American Engineer of the Year by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, in recognition of his strong project leadership and exemplary contributions to engineering, science and society.
Since beginning his career with the U.S. Navy in 1991, Mehta has built a reputation as a well-respected, highly skilled engineer among his colleagues. As a senior electrical engineer and technical program manager within the sensors and sonar systems department, he has become widely recognized as a technical expert in sonar-signal processing who has made significant contributions to advancing research topics and projects critical to the Navy’s warfighting capabilities.
Most recently, Mehta was recognized by Adm. Jonathan Greenert, U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, for the successful Torpedo Warning System sea test that took place early last year. The test was the first end-to-end at-sea test of the surface ship torpedo defense system borne on an aircraft carrier, as well as the first automatic targeting of an incoming torpedo target from a ship and the first launch of a countermeasure anti-torpedo from a carrier.
A resident of Bristol, Mehta holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester in New York.
Mehta and other Asian American Engineer of the Year winners will be recognized at an awards banquet on March 1 in San Francisco.
