NUWC to dedicate $24.3M building for submarine support

NEWPORT – U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline will join the Naval Undersea Warfare Center on April 7 to dedicate a new $24.3 million electromagnetic sensor facility built to accommodate submarine servicing, prototyping and production support.

The 54,000-square-foot facility, under construction since October 2011, includes six laboratories and a five-story periscope tower designed for repair and certification of periscopes, submarine communications systems, electronic warfare equipment, and imaging and optical systems.

The building is NUWC’s first certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction Gold Certification, and will replace an older building at NUWC’s Pier Two site which is scheduled for removal.

Suffolk Construction Co. of Boston was the general contractor on the project.
