PROVIDENCE – The New England Clean Energy Council has named The NanoSteel Co. Inc. its Emerging Company of the Year, the developer of nano-structured steel materials announced Friday.

The New England Clean Energy Council, a regional industry coalition of clean-energy companies, presented the Emerging Company of the Year award at its sixth annual Green Tie Gala, held Thursday at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel with more than 400 clean-energy leaders, government officials and venture capitalists in attendance.

“NanoSteel is honored to receive the New England Clean Energy Council’s Emerging Company of the Year award,” said Dave Paratore, president and CEO of NanoSteel, in a statement. “Building on the inherent benefits of steel, the most recyclable metal in the world, our mission is to offer material solutions that address challenges at the intersection of automotive safety, efficiency and emissions.”

The Emerging Company of the Year is awarded annually to an organization newly emerged from its development phase that promises to build on early momentum with rapid commercial growth.

NanoSteel is the first Rhode Island company to win the Emerging Company of the Year award.

“NanoSteel is at the precipice of bringing its nano-structured steel alloy technology into the automotive industry,” said Peter Rothstein, president of the New England Clean Energy Council. “We are thrilled to provide them with this award and congratulate all of tonight’s award winners, which exemplify innovative companies leading research, development, adoption and deployment of clean-energy technologies in our region.”

Mass. Gov. Deval L. Patrick also was honored at the Green Tie Gala event as the 2013 Clean Energy Hall of Fame inductee, in recognition of his “leadership and dedication in growing the clean-energy sector.”

Past winners of the Emerging Company of the Year award include Waltham, Mass.-based Harvest Power (2010), Newton, Mass.-based BigBelly Solar (2011) and Bedford, Mass.-based Joule Unlimited (2012).
