John H. Mosby was recently named scout executive/CEO of the Boy Scouts of America’s Narragansett Council, which serves 17,000 youths in Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Pawcatuck, Conn. Mosby has been a scouting professional for more than 20 years and has served as scout executive for two other councils, both in the Midwest. In addition to being an Eagle Scout, he is also a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow and serves as an assistant scoutmaster. Mosby holds a B.S. in education with a minor in mathematics from Missouri State University.

PBN: When did you first become involved in scouting?
MOSBY: Being an Eagle Scout, it just seemed natural for me to choose a career with the Boy Scouts of America in order to give back to a program that did so much for me growing up. I first began my career with the Boy Scouts in Kansas City in 1990 as a district executive, and progressed through the ranks to eventually serve as the scout executive/CEO of the operation out of Davenport, Iowa. I then also served as the scout executive/CEO on the North Shore of Chicago.

PBN: What might people not realize about Boy Scouts?
MOSBY: When people think about the Boy Scouts, they most often think about camping in the woods, tying knots and helping older people across the street. But what we do for youth is so much more than that. Scouting teaches leadership skills better than any other youth organization, and we give [youths] confidence and the tools to apply that to future situations like college and their employment. We develop future leaders, and most employers desire the youths from our program to be on their future work teams.

PBN: Can you tell us about your vision for the future of the Narragansett Council?
MOSBY: I want to see our program grow to impact many more youths in the Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut area. My vision is to create opportunities that youths can only find by being involved with the Boy Scouts, and to make our program the No. 1 choice among families who want their children to develop leadership skills and be prepared for life. &#8226
