PROVIDENCE – Narragansett Brewing Co. placed 38th on the Brewers Association list of the top 50 craft breweries in the country and 45th among the top brewing companies.
The trade group represents small and independent craft brewers, and based its rankings on sales volume.
“The top U.S. brewers continue to drive demand, growth, innovation and exponential interest in beers from small and independent brewers,” Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association, said in a statement. “With a historic record number of breweries in the U.S., the top brewers continue to open new markets and expose beer drinkers to a variety of fuller-flavored styles and offerings.”
First on the craft breweries list is D.G. Yuengling and Son, Pottsville, Penn., followed by Boston Beer Co.
Harpoon Brewery in Boston ranked 19th.
The association also rated the top 50 overall brewing companies in the country based on volume. Anheuser-Busch Inc., of St. Louis, Mo., topped that list, followed by MillerCoors in Chicago. Narragansett ranked 45th on that list. Yuengling was fourth, behind Pabst Brewing Co. in Los Angeles.
The lists came out just in time for National Beer Day, which is today.
The association also said Rhode Island has 14 craft breweries, ranking it 45th in the nation. More than 20,000 barrels of craft beer are produced in the Ocean State each year, it said.
Earlier this week, Narragansett’s CEO Mark Hellendrung said he is bringing the brew back to Rhode Island, and is partnering with the owners of The Guild on Main Street in Pawtucket on a new craft-brewing consortium. Nearly all of Narragansett’s beers are produced out of state now.
