National Grid: 380K electric, 12K gas customers participated in energy efficiency programs

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s largest utility company, National Grid, projects energy efficiency programs installed during 2014 could save about 3.3 million megawatt hours of electricity and 58 therms of natural gas in the next 10 to 13 years, according to an initial report.
The company says more than 380,000 electric and 12,000 gas customers participated in its energy efficiency program last year and the projected reduction is equivalent to taking 543,000 cars off the road for the year. The results are based on a preliminary results from the company and final numbers will be released in May.
“It’s clear that these programs are directly helping Rhode Islanders save energy and money, all while boosting economic activity, incomes and employment,” said Timothy F. Horan, president of National Grid in Rhode Island, in a statement.
Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick is one commercial customer that worked with National Grid toward becoming a more energy efficient establishment, according to the company. With financial help from the utility company, Crowne Plaza upgraded its tinted windows to reduce solar gain and installed interior and exterior LED lighting among other upgrades, according to National Grid.
“The Crowne Plaza Hotel is dedicated and enthusiastic to continue our energy efficiency projects and the overall reduction of our use of fossil fuels,” said Deidra Tart, Crowne Plaza facilities manager, in a statement.
National Grid calculates its energy efficiency programs could create about $259 million through lower energy costs and lower maintenance for electricity customers and about $50 million for gas customers in the next 10 to 13 years.
