National Grid raises funds for Gloria Gemma

PAWTUCKET – National Grid and retailers recently helped increase breast cancer awareness in support of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, raising $4,788 through the sale of energy efficient light bulbs.
Laurie Acone, a senior program manager from National Grid, presented the donation on behalf of National Grid to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation at the nonprofit’s Pawtucket location in March.
“We are very happy to be able support the Gloria Gemma Foundation through an innovative LED lightingpromotion,” said Acone. “Not only were we able to help Rhode Islanders save energy, but we’re pleased to provide support to those in need through the Gloria Gemma Foundation.”
During October and early November 2014, National Grid supplied local hardware and independent lighting stores throughout Rhode Island with pink-based certified energy efficient bulbs manufactured by Greenlite Lighting. A total of 3,192 bulbs were sold, with $1.50 from every bulb sold donated to the Foundation.
The donated amount included $1 from participating retailers and 50 cents from Greenlite Lighting.
According to National Grid, involvement with the Foundation is part of an ongoing effort to support the communities it serves.
“We are truly grateful for the generous donation and continued support from National Grid and its partners,” said Maria Gemma, executive director of the Foundation. “Year-round, we’re committed to providing life-changing resources and support, and this would not be possible without the dedication of our community partners.”
The Foundation commits 90 cents of every dollar to the free resources offered to individuals and families affected by breast cancer in the local community.
In Rhode Island, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed and second deadliest form of cancer among women. One out of every six Rhode Island women will be diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime.
