National Grid warns of billing scams

PROVIDENCE – National Grid and the R.I. Attorney General’s office have received numerous reports of utility billing scams, the electric and gas company announced Friday.

Customers have reported receiving calls from scammers threatening to turn off utility service unless the customer provides bank account information, National Grid said in a release.

The release notes that while National Grid calls customers regarding payments, the company never requests direct payment over the phone. Customers who receive scam calls should notify the company, the release said.
