NecronomiCon celebrating the 125th birthday of H.P. Lovecraft

PROVIDENCE – NecronomiCon Providence 2015 will celebrate the 125th birthday of author H.P. Lovecraft with a four-day citywide conference and festival to pay tribute to the author in his hometown and to celebrate the city’s culture and history from Aug. 20 to 23.
The celebration will kick-off with a welcome party, “Hiding under the Covers,” at Aurora, 276 Westminster St. tonight from 6 to midnight.
The Lovecraft Grand Emporium is set to open Thursday at the R.I. Convention Center, running through Sunday.
Open to the public for $5, fans will experience an array of more than 60 booksellers, publishers, print artists, sculptors, jewelers and general purveyors, bringing together vendors from across the globe to display items related to the life and works of H.P. Lovecraft and his influence on the literary world.
Opening ceremonies to celebrate Lovecraft’s birthday will begin Thursday at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, hosted by Waterfire’s Barnaby Evans. The event, free and open to the public until capacity is reached, will feature music by organist Gigi Mitchell-Velasco.
Following the ceremony, guests are invited to the opening reception of the Ars Necronomica exhibit featuring world-class Lovecraft-inspired works at 6:30 p.m. at the Providence Art Club. In addition, there will be an Ars Necronomica print exhibit at Julian’s on Broadway, where fans will have the opportunity to purchase print pieces after viewing the samples at the restaurant. Both exhibits will run from Thursday through Sunday.
The official Lovecraft Birthday Bash will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Façade Lot at 35 Weybosset St. Sponsored by Narragansett Beer, the event is open to the public for free, and will feature musical acts K. Redfearn & the Eyesores along with the Big Nazo Intergalactic Band, a music/video mash-up by Frank Difficult and a special 10th anniversary screening of Lovecraft’s “Call of Cthulhu.”
There will be daily film screenings and live theater shows every day featuring a combination of Lovecraft-inspired feature films, short cuts and live theater productions, which will be open to the public for $5. Full feature films will be screened at the Providence Public Library, while short films will be shown at the AS220 Black Box Theater. The live theater productions will take place at the AS220 Black Box Theater.
The R.I. Historical Society will offer a special H.P. Lovecraft tour commemorating his 125th birthday on Saturday at 12 p.m. The tour admission fee is $10, and will depart from John Brown House. Reservations are recommended, and can be made by contacting bbarnes@rihs.org.
