PROVIDENCE – Providence Community Health Centers Inc., a nonprofit health care organization providing affordable, comprehensive primary health care services to more than 50,000 residents in greater Providence, announced that Dr. Jennifer Nelson has been hired as its dental director. She succeeds Mary McCabe, who is remaining on staff on a per diem basis to assist in the transition, PCHC told Providence Business News.

In her new assignment, Nelson will provide leadership and direction to the clinical dental staff at PCHC Dental, which offers dental care services at Crossroads Rhode Island for PCHC’s adult patients, and at its Prairie Avenue location for children, ages 2-18, and pregnant women.

Nelson identified her career goals early; as a teenager, she worked as a dental assistant in her father’s dental practice. While studying at the University of Rhode Island for her undergraduate degree, she became a registered dental hygienist. She owned and operated a successful temp placement business for dental offices. Nelson earned her doctor of dental medicine degree from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and had a private practice in Attleboro, Mass., from 2005-2016.

A fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, she has served as a volunteer instructor at both Harvard and Boston universities’ school of dental medicine.

“I fundamentally believe in the mission of PCHC. After working in dentistry for over 30 years, in every capacity, I’m very excited about directing a larger staff of dedicated professionals who also believe in the same mission,” Nelson said in the PCHC statement.
