PROVIDENCE – NetZero, the company that created the free dial-up Internet connection phenomenon in 1998, launched a 4G mobile broadband service in 80 cities across the country this week, including Providence.

Monthly plans range from free for 200MB of data – enough the company says to check email and surf the Internet – to $50 for the “Platinum” 4GB data plan. Users can set their service at either LightSpeed, which has download speeds of up to 1Mbps or WarpSpeed, which has speeds of up to 10Mbps, depending on how much data they want to use.

In order to access the NetZero broadband, customers need to buy either a $50 antenna stick that plugs into the USB port on their computer, or a $100 “mobile hotspot.”

The benefit of a system like NetZero’s is that users can create their own Internet connections without the risk of using unsecured public networks at airports, coffee shops and hotels.

“Unlike public Wi-Fi networks, where credit card numbers and other personal information may be exposed to hackers and data thieves, the NetZero 4G Mobile Broadband service delivers a protected, private Internet connection anytime, anywhere within its coverage area,” said the company in a release.
