LINCOLN – Penmaker A.T. Cross Co. on Tuesday introduced the Century Copper Pen, the world’s first pen made with CuVerro antimicrobial copper manufactured by Kentucky-based metals supplier Olin Brass.
When cleaned regularly, the copper surface of the pen kills 99.9 percent of bacteria within two hours of contact, including microbes known to cause Staph infections, a common strain of E. coli and other harmful bacteria. The ballpoint pen has a suggested retail price of $50 and is now available through select U.S. retailers and online at the A.T. Cross website.
“The Century Copper Pen represents a huge step forward in our efforts to bring CuVerro bactericidal touch surfaces into the product mainstream and everyday life,” said Jeff Byrd, vice president of marketing and sales for Olin Brass, in a statement. “It illustrates how simple and sensible an autonomous bacteria control measure can be, and it’s our hope that other manufacturers of everyday personal products will take notice.”
A.T. Cross Co., headquartered in Lincoln, is a leading manufacturer of high-end pens and fine writing instruments. The A.T. Cross brand was sold in July 2013 to an affiliate of private equity firm Clarion Capital Partners for $60 million, and the company formerly known as A.T. Cross changed its name to Costa Inc. and refocused its business model toward the sale of its sport sunglasses brands.
