New Bedford company settles overtime claims

BOSTON – A New Bedford shellfish-processing company will pay more than $78,000 in restitution and penalties to resolve allegations their workers failed to receive overtime wages, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced last week.

Coakley’s office had received a complaint in September 2012 from a former employee of Brayton Shellfish Inc., a company purchased by New Bedford Shellfish LLC in July 2012 alleging nonpayment of overtime for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. As a result of its investigation, Coakley’s office determined that 32 employees were denied overtime wages from October 2010 through July 2012.

In a news release, Coakley said the company cooperated with the AG’s investigation.

The matter was handled by Assistant Attorney General Lisa Price and was investigated by Inspector Nora Saint-Martin, both of AG Coakley’s Fair Labor Division. •
