NEW BEDFORD – If Boston is selected as the host city for the 2024 Olympic summer games, New Bedford will host Olympic and Paralympic sailing on Buzzards Bay.
Mayor Jon Mitchell and Rich Davey from the Boston 2024 Partnership announced New Bedford’s potential role in the games on Thursday, and touted its location in the center of the bay, which hosts the Buzzards Bay Regatta.
“We were convinced that New Bedford could significantly contribute to the strength of the Boston 2024 bid. We made our case, pledged our partnership and asked 2024 to evaluate our proposal on the merits,” Mitchell said in a news release.
New Bedford was the global center of the 19th century whaling industry. Today, it is the home of the nation’s top commercial fishing fleet, stated the release.
The release said that having the city host the Olympic events will spur the revitalization of historic Fort Taber, which would serve as a viewing area for spectators as well as for medal ceremonies.
Davey said they are “thrilled” New Bedford has agreed to host Olympic sailing in Buzzards Bay, which he called “one of the most spectacular and iconic locations for competitive sailing anywhere.”

Boston 2024 plans to announce additional venue hosts over the next several weeks; the organization stated that this is part of a “multi-step, multi-year bid process” that culminates in the selection in summer 2017 of the 2024 host city by members of the International Olympic Committee.
