EAST PROVIDENCE – New England Construction has announced the promotion of Matt Sluter, son of founder and CEO David Sluter, to the position of company president as part of the firm’s transition to the next generation of family-owned leadership.

Matt Sluter, 35, is the youngest of three sons who work for New England Construction and has worked in the industry since graduating from Bucknell University in 2001. After returning to Rhode Island to join New England Construction in 2005, Sluter began as an assistant project manager and eventually moved into various positions including most recently vice president.

In his new role, Sluter will assume decision-making authority over all aspects of the family-owned construction management firm as it positions itself for continued growth, said New England Construction.

Since its founding in 1985, the real estate and construction-management firm has grown its annual revenue from $10 million to $60 million. New England Construction currently employs more than 40 full-time employees and anticipates growing the company an additional 15 percent over the next year.

“Matt’s appointment is recognition of his ability to manage all key functional areas of the business,” said David Sluter. “On a personal level, I am very proud of my son. Everything that he’s accomplished he has earned, and his work ethic and leadership abilities are the right fit to guide the company moving forward.”

In addition to Matt Sluter’s promotion, the leadership team at New England Construction has also added George Malakidis as the company director of operations and Wayne Grenon as vice president of finance.

Malakidis, a construction industry veteran of more than 16 years, most recently held a position as senior project manager for Gilbane Building Co. of Providence and is experienced in design, engineering, procurement, estimating and construction management. As director of operations, he will be responsible for all aspects of project execution at New England Construction.

Grenon also brings an extensive amount of experience and knowledge to the company in both finance and construction. Before joining New England Construction, Grenon served as vice president of finance at Bowdin Construction of Needham, Mass.

New England Construction said the changes to its leadership team come in anticipation of company growth and increased demand for services.

“We’re very excited to add both George and Wayne to our team,” said Matt Sluter. “They are both among the brightest and best talents in the industry, and we are confident that they will be a great addition to our team and to our company moving forward.”
