Roger Williams University School of Law presents a symposium that brings together a remarkable collection of law professors, First Amendment lawyers, journalists, and a leading federal judge to assess from various perspectives, both domestic and international, the impact 50 years later of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, granting the press substantial protection from the chilling effect of lawsuits seeking large damage awards for unflattering news reports. The symposium includes a keynote address from Robert Sack, judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and media law expert, as well as panel discussions evaluating the Supreme Court’s decision in theory and in practice.
