Providence students sponsor registry drive

Twenty-two girls from Hope High School and The Wheeler School – neighboring schools on the East Side of Providence – are sponsoring a Bone Marrow Donor Registry Drive on Dec. 16.
The drive takes place from 3 to 7 p.m. in the foyer of Hope High School.
The marrow drive, open to adults aged 18-44, hopes to attract more donors to join the registry, which supports thousands with blood cancers such as leukemia or diseases such as sickle cell anemia. Participants can join the registry by getting their cheek swabbed and filling out some paperwork, according to the RI Blood Center.
The students created the Hope/Wheeler Girls Alliance during the 2013-14 school year to strengthen community engagement and empower girls in the two schools, Coordinator Princess Bomba said. She also is director of Unity and Diversity at The Wheeler School.
