The Institute of Museum and Library Services recently awarded $10,938 to the Newport Art Museum to broaden the reach of its successful MUSE program.
The 10-year-old program promotes interest in museum careers by engaging local high school students through site visits to museums and historic sites, as well as exhibition preparation training and meetings with artists and professional staff. The MUSE program also works with the R.I. Department of Education to provide in-school career training to three local high schools.
The Newport Art Museum will use the institute’s funding to expand the program, offering it as an arts elective in more than 10 cities and towns in Southern Rhode Island. The museum will also increase the number of paid summer internships, as well as create a Museum Career Fair.
The Institute of Museum and Library provides federal support for more than 100,000 libraries and 35,000 museums across the U.S. and its grants are awarded to projects that allow care and increased access to established collections, as well as projects that promote education and community engagement. •
