Newport Hospital seeks proposals for child physical fitness programs

NEWPORT – Newport Hospital, through its Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund, is accepting grant proposals for creative ways to engage local children in physical activity. Now through Feb. 1, individuals and organizations can submit grant proposals geared toward improving the health and fitness of Newport County school-age children.

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2010, a $3 million grant from the Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust was conferred to Newport Hospital by Elizabeth Prince of Newport and her children Guillaume de Ramel, Diana Oehrli and Regis de Ramel. Established in partnership with Newport Hospital, the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund was created with that donation. Funding is available for programs that focus on underserved, school-age children in Newport County and promote health and fitness through activity and participation. Last year, Newport Hospital, through its Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund, awarded $75,330 to several local grant recipients for community programs ranging from biking, ballet, soccer and rugby to trail guiding, pet care courses, and instruction on designing, building and rowing a boat. To date, more than $215,000 has been awarded to area organizations.
